How Much Maintenance Does An AGA Need?

When it comes to AGA cookers, they’re built for life. In a search for the oldest, working AGA, the AGA dated back to 1932. So, while an AGA cookers are made to last, it does need regular servicing to ensure it is always running optimally. Here at Edwards and Godding we have years of experience dealing with AGA cookers. You can trust our engineers to treat your AGA cooker with care.

How Often Does An AGA Need Servicing?

When it comes to AGA servicing, the frequency all depends on which type of AGA you have. It is the heat storage system that requires maintenance, but not all AGA cookers work in the same way any more. At the bottom of this post, you can find your AGA servicing schedule below by looking for the fuel it uses, that’ll tell you how often it needs a service. Then you can learn more about AGA servicing if yours requires it.

What’s Involved In An AGA Servicing?

The main focus of AGA servicing is to clean the burners and replace the wicks as needed. To do this, your AGA must be cooled. This means you will need to turn off your AGA the day before you get it serviced so that it has enough time to cool down.

As well as cleaning the burners, AGA servicing engineers will take the opportunity to test all the controls to make sure that everything is working. They will also clean the vents of the debris that builds up over time. Part of AGA servicing is checking that the insulation on the lids and doors is still in good condition and testing all of the safety systems and devices.

For oil-powered AGAs, the oil rate, tank and pipes need to be check to ensure there is no leak. This needs to be completed by a CORGI registered trades person.

Seasoning Your Ovens

Since the ovens in your AGA are made from cast iron, this does mean that they are susceptible to rust. It is possible to prevent this by seasoning your oven. If you haven’t used your AGA for a while, it’s a good idea to do this before you get up and running.

Seasoning is really easy to do. You just rub corn oil on the internal surfaces of the oven, leave the ovens on full heat for 1 hour and seasoning is complete.

If you have an AGA R7 or an AGAeR7, then you don’t need to do this. They have a new coating which seals the cast iron.
